Recently, we took on a project for a 90-year-old lady who got scammed. The previous crew had torn the front half of the roof down and just disappeared. It was an adventure, to say the least. I guess you could say I've spent my career chasing "the other guy," whoever he is.

Ask a lot of questions and try to communicate before you hire them. If they're hard to get in touch with and can't answer questions before you hire, you can bet it will only get worse after you hire. Make sure you're both on the same page and that you understand and approve of their plan. Sometimes, things get lost in conversation.

There are dozens of questions you should ask. The unfortunate part is that if you aren't an expert on the project, whether roofing or renovation, you wouldn't really know which ones are important to your project. Hire the person who can help you become an expert; communication is key.
